He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science degrees in Exercise Physiology. WHile attending college, he was a member of the Men's Varsity Rowing Team, and received a varsity letter. This was followed by four years of Podiatric Medical School, at William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He then spent two years of post-graduate training in a podiatric surgical residency program at Winona Memorial HOspital in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Dr. James F. Guhl, MD, was an orthopedic surgeon and one of the pioneers and world leaders in arthroscopic surgery, having practiced for many years in Milwaukee. The support and guidance of his family, his extensive educational background, and his active participation and interest in sports and sports medicine played key roles in his chosen profession.

He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, Wisconsin Society of Podiatric Medicine, and American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.

He has adopted and individualized approach to foot and ankle care, taking into account a patient's age, occupation, activity level, medical history, foot type and shoes. His knowledge and training allow him to help his patients make informed decision and chose the best treatment program that fits their specific needs.

In his free time, Dr. Guhl enjoys bicycling, sailing and playing guitar. He and his wife, a fellow podiatrist, welcomed the birth of their first child in April 2006.
